About UPSC CMS
The Combined Medical Services Examination recruits medical officers for the Central Health Service, assistant divisional medical officers in the Railways, and general duty medical officers in the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. A candidate must have passed the written and practical parts of the final M.B.B.S. examination. Someone who has yet to pass, or who has yet to finish the compulsory rotating internship, may apply; appointment comes only after the internship is complete and proof of passing is produced in the time the notice allows.
For the 2026 examination a candidate must not have turned 32 on 1 August 2026 (born not earlier than 2 August 1994). For Medical Officers Grade in the General Duty Medical Officers sub-cadre of the Central Health Service the upper age is 35 on that date. The notice gives age relaxation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, Other Backward Classes, ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disability. The fee in the notice is ₹200. Women, and candidates in the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and benchmark-disability categories, are exempt.
The written examination is two objective papers on one day, each of 250 marks and two hours, set in English only, at M.B.B.S. standard. Paper I is General Medicine and Paediatrics: 120 questions, 96 from General Medicine and 24 from Paediatrics. Paper II is Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Preventive and Social Medicine: 120 questions, 40 from each part. There are four choices. A wrong answer costs one third of the marks of that question. A blank answer costs nothing. The 2026 timetable is Paper I from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Paper II from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The two sittings are not one clock.
Candidates who qualify on the written examination are called for a personality test of 100 marks. The written total is 500. Where aggregate marks are equal, the notice ranks the higher written total first, then the older candidate, then the candidate who finished internship earlier. The Commission may fix a qualifying mark in either paper; the scheme does not print a number. The 2026 notice gave tentative vacancies of 864 in the Central Health Service, 450 in the Railways, 14 in the New Delhi Municipal Council and 30 in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and said those figures can change. The written examination was held on 2 August 2026.
