About UPPSC PCS
The Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services (PCS) Examination is held by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission for the state services named in the advertisement. The current notice is Advertisement No. A-1/E-1/2026, dated 25 June 2026. A candidate needs a bachelor's degree of a recognised university by the last date for applications. Some posts ask for a further qualification, which the advertisement states against that post. Online applications on uppsc.up.nic.in ran from 25 June 2026 to 27 July 2026, with correction and fee reconciliation until 3 August 2026. One Time Registration is required first, from otr.pariksha.nic.in.
Age is reckoned on 1 July 2026, from the date of birth on the High School certificate. A candidate must have turned 21 and must not have crossed 40: not born earlier than 2 July 1986 and not later than 1 July 2005. For a person with disability the advertisement's maximum is 55 (not born before 2 July 1971). Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class candidates of Uttar Pradesh, and the other categories named in the age paragraph, get five years on the upper limit (not born before 2 July 1981). Persons with disabilities of Uttar Pradesh are also given fifteen years in that paragraph. Reservation and age relaxation for those categories are for permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh. The preliminary fee printed in the advertisement is ₹125 for Unreserved, EWS and OBC (₹100 plus ₹25 online), ₹65 for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and ex-servicemen, and ₹25 for persons with disabilities.
There are three stages. The preliminary is a screening test of two compulsory objective papers, answered on an OMR sheet, each of 200 marks and two hours, set in Hindi and English. Paper I (General Studies) is 150 questions. Paper II (General Studies II, often called CSAT) is 100 questions and is qualifying at 33%. A candidate must sit both papers. The call for the Main Examination uses the marks of Paper I only. A wrong answer costs one third of the marks of that question. A blank answer costs nothing. More than one answer is treated as wrong. The advertisement says about fifteen times the vacancies are called for the Main Examination.
The Main Examination is eight compulsory conventional papers, three hours each: General Hindi (150), Essay (150) and General Studies I to VI (200 each), 1,500 marks in all. The essay paper asks for one essay of about 700 words from each of three sections. General Studies V and VI are on Uttar Pradesh. A candidate may answer in English, Hindi or Urdu, except where a paper says otherwise. The personality test is 100 marks. The selection uses the Main Examination and the interview; preliminary marks are not added. The advertisement says about three times the vacancies are called for the interview, and that for some posts the service rules use the written total alone. It puts the vacancies at about 500, and says the number may change. The date and centre are sent later on the e-admission certificate.
